Siliguri, 25th December: An atmosphere of widespread tension grips Siliguri where a woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband and her brother-in-law in an attempt to murder. The accused husband Jayanta Singha Roy and his brother Papai Singha Roy were arrested on charges of attempted murder while the victim, Priyanka Singha Roy, is currently undergoing medical treatment in Siliguri District Hospital.

According to information, Priyanka was wedded to the accused Jayanta about a few months ago and has been allegedly subjected to physical and mental abuse ever since. Reportedly, the couple was involved in frequent disagreements that led to regular scuffles. On Saturday, Priyanka went to her grandmother’s residence and returned home later at night. However, on Sunday, she was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and brother-in-law.

Following the incident, Priyanka was taken to the hospital in a severely burnt state. Meanwhile, her family members filed a complaint at the Ashighar outpost. The accused criminals were subsequently arrested and produced before the court. Later, the alleged criminals were taken to the Siliguri District Hospital for a routine medical examination.

On the other hand, tension engulfed the area as Priyanka’s family expressed their outrage upon encountering the criminals outside the hospital’s emergency department. The police, thereafter, transported both the accused to the Bhaktinagar police station. In the meantime, Priyanka has been transferred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) as her condition remained critical.
