Rajganj, 25th June: A woman died after being bitten by a venomous snake while working in her kitchen in Rajganj, with her family alleging that medical negligence at the hospital contributed to her death.
The deceased has been identified as Sabita Pal (54), a resident of Hudugachh village under Majhiali Gram Panchayat in Rajganj block.
According to family members, Sabita Pal was bitten by a venomous snake on Wednesday night while working in the kitchen. She was immediately rushed to Rajganj Rural Hospital for treatment.
Her husband, Sindhuram Pal, and other family members alleged that doctors informed them that there were no signs of venom poisoning in her body, but advised that she be kept under observation at the hospital for 24 hours. Accordingly, she was admitted to the hospital.
However, the woman died around an hour after being admitted. The family has alleged that negligence and lapses on the part of the doctors led to her death.
Responding to the allegations, hospital doctor Kautuk Bagchi described the incident as unfortunate and said that all necessary treatment and medical efforts were provided after the patient was brought to the hospital. He added that a detailed report of the incident had been submitted and that the exact cause of death could not be determined until the post-mortem report is received.
Rajganj Panchayat Samiti member and BJP leader Nitai Mondal also visited the hospital after learning about the incident. After speaking with the family, he said allegations of medical negligence had been raised, but the actual circumstances would become clear only after the post-mortem report is available. He further stated that the matter would be brought to the attention of senior health department officials.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination on Thursday. Family members said they would lodge a written complaint against the concerned doctor at Rajganj Police Station.
