Siliguri, 20th July: A case of alleged harassment, misbehaviour and an attempted abduction of a woman on a busy road in Siliguri has created panic in the area. Police have arrested one accused in connection with the incident. The arrested accused has been identified as Arjun Thakur, a resident of Dhaknikata area.
According to reports, the incident took place late Sunday night when the woman had gone to a biryani shop near Darjeeling More with her husband. During this time, Arjun Thakur allegedly arrived at the spot in a car along with some associates.
It is alleged that Arjun and his associates passed inappropriate comments at the woman. When her husband objected, the accused allegedly assaulted him.
The accused then allegedly tried to forcibly take the woman away in his car. Seeing the incident unfold on the road, local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the woman.
While Arjun’s associates managed to flee from the spot, locals caught him and allegedly thrashed him before police arrived.
Pradhan Nagar police station personnel reached the spot and arrested Arjun Thakur. The woman later lodged a written complaint at the police station, following which a case was registered under relevant sections.
The accused was produced before the Siliguri court on Monday, while police have started an investigation and are conducting raids to trace the other absconding accused.
