VLTD machine installation becomes mandatory in passenger vehicles across West Bengal, fines to be imposed on violators

Taking a major decision, the West Bengal government has now made it mandatory to install VLTD i.e. Vehicle Location Tracking System machine and alarm switch in all the passenger vehicles of the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the VLTD machine through a program in Alipore of which the police and transport department will keep surveillance 24X7.


The benefit of installing the machine will help especially women traveling alone. If they face any kind of eve teasing or feel their safety is being compromised then they can press the alarm switch present in the vehicle which will shortly provide police assistance. Not only ensuring safety for women but also for the drivers if they get stuck mid-way with no proper help. Pressing the said alarms will automatically alert the police and concerned authorities assisting in ensuring safety. Police and RTO will always be connected through the VLTD machine. Due to this RTO and Police will get the signal as soon as the switch is pressed. After which the said VLTD machine can be tracked and reached the place. Not only this but with the help of this machine the speed, distance, time limit and most importantly the safety of the women will be monitored all the time.

As per the information received, with the help of the said machine, RTO can extract the data of three months old vehicle. A deadline has been set till March 31 to install the machine in vehicles across the state. If anybody fails to comprehend to abide by the new rule machine and fails to install the machine in the vehicles within the stipulated time, then a fine may be levied. The cost of VLTD machine will be around Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000 whereas the cost of an alarm system switch will be Rs 300 to Rs 500. It will be mandatory to install one VLTD machine and about two alarm system switches in each vehicle. Also, from now on all passenger vehicles will be given fitness a certificate only after installing the said machine.


According to the information, the RTO will give information about the entire subject by holding a meeting with Siliguri’s passenger vehicle driver’s union. After which this system will commence in Siliguri also.
