Siliguri, 10th June: Matigara Police arrested two persons within five hours of a jewellery shop theft and recovered stolen silver ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees.
The arrested accused have been identified as Ankit Roy alias Abhishek (20) and his younger brother Bishal Roy (18). According to police sources, the duo allegedly stole silver ornaments from a jewellery shop near Thokar Bridge in Matigara on Tuesday evening.
As per reports, following the theft incident, the shop owner lodged a complaint at Matigara Police Station. Acting on the complaint, a plainclothes police team launched an investigation and detained the two suspects. During interrogation, both allegedly confessed to their involvement in the theft.
Subsequently, police conducted a raid in the Sutki Godown area on Tuesday night and recovered the stolen silver ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees.
A case has been registered against the accused, and both have been arrested. They were produced before the Siliguri court on Wednesday. Police have also initiated the legal process to return the recovered ornaments to the jewellery shop owner.
The shop owner expressed relief over the recovery of the stolen items and thanked the police for their swift action. Further investigation is underway.
