Siliguri, 06th August: The transgender community has taken a humanitarian initiative to support people affected by severe floods in Assam’s Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. The All India Transgender Community not only distributed relief materials but also contributed ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Assistance Fund.
Led by North Bengal’s Sona Devi, a four-member team from Siliguri reached Dibrugarh and visited flood-affected areas for five days. During this period, the team provided relief materials to around 1,000 families affected by the floods.
Later, on Wednesday, the team reached the Dibrugarh Secretariat and handed over ₹25 lakh as assistance to the Chief Minister’s Relief Assistance Fund on behalf of the transgender community.
Sona Devi said that the transgender community is also an integral part of society and has emotions and humanitarian values. She stated that after witnessing the devastation caused by the floods, the transgender community decided to come forward and help those in need.
She further said that transgender members from different parts of the country provided financial assistance and relief materials, making the initiative possible.
Sona Devi added that the support will continue, and the transgender community plans to visit the flood-affected areas again to provide assistance to around 4,000 more families.
The initiative by the transgender community has been appreciated by various sections of society and is being seen as an example of humanity.
