Traffic curbs imposed and security tightened in Siliguri ahead of PM Modi’s visit

Siliguri, 11th April: Administrative preparations in Siliguri have been significantly strengthened ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Prior to his arrival, the Siliguri Police Commissionerate has imposed temporary restrictions on the movement of heavy and medium goods vehicles across several key routes in the city from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM on April 11.

According to officials, truck movement will remain completely suspended along major stretches, including Khanna Hotel to Two Mile, Panighata More to Bihar More, Adalpur More to Khaprail More, Thakre Bridge to Khaprail More, and the Matigara Bypass. Restrictions will also be enforced from Chathat Medical to the Phansidewa Bypass and from Ila Pal Chowdhury Memorial High School to Darjeeling More.

To ensure smooth traffic flow, diversions have been implemented. Heavy vehicles arriving from Gangtok, Kalimpong, and the Dooars will be redirected via the Eastern Bypass towards Fulbari and Ghoshpukur. Similarly, vehicles travelling from Jalpaiguri to Raiganj have been instructed to use alternative routes. However, essential services have been exempted from these restrictions.

Meanwhile, security agencies have been placed on high alert ahead of the Prime Minister’s mega public meeting scheduled at Kawakhali Ground on April 12. Intensive checks are being conducted at the venue using sniffer dogs and metal detectors. Surveillance has been enhanced to neutralize any potential threats in advance.

The Indian Air Force has also initiated trial runs with a special helicopter to ensure seamless VVIP movement. Additional police personnel have been deployed across the city, and CCTV cameras are monitoring all activities in and around the venue.

Preparations for the public meeting are nearing completion, with the BJP finalizing arrangements for the stage, sound systems, lighting, parking, drinking water, and temporary sanitation facilities. The administration has appealed to the public to adhere to traffic regulations and cooperate with authorities to ensure a smooth and secure event.
