Siliguri, 11th June: Siliguri Municipal Corporation demolished an alleged illegal structure in Ward No. 11 during an enforcement drive. The action was taken following allegations that a permanent tin shed had been constructed on a government road and was being used for hotel business activities, causing inconvenience to the public.
Khokan Bhattacharya, on behalf of the market committee, stated that the structure had previously been removed by the civic body after a notice was issued. However, the shed was allegedly rebuilt at the same location and business activities resumed. The committee claimed that the structure was obstructing public movement and creating difficulties for emergency service vehicles.
Meanwhile, Ishwar Chandra Mittal denied the allegations. He claimed that he had not received any direct notice from the municipal corporation and was informed through a third party. He also asserted that the structure was built on his private land and not on a government road.
The incident created a stir in the area, with local residents stating that encroachment on public land and roads should not be tolerated.
The municipal corporation has stated that its drive against illegal constructions on government land and roads will continue and that strict action will be taken in such cases.
