SMC conducts inspection on illegal construction and irregularities at mall on Siliguri’s Sevoke Road

Siliguri, 27th June: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), acting on allegations of illegal construction, carried out a major inspection drive at a mall on Sevoke Road in Siliguri on Saturday, under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai.

During the inspection, officials found that parts of the mall corridor had been illegally encroached upon through unauthorized construction. Several irregularities were also detected in multiple restaurants and bars operating within the premises.

Officials said that a number of establishments failed to produce valid fire safety licences, while in several cases the licences had already expired. Allegations also surfaced that illegal beer production was being carried out inside one of the bars. When asked for documentation, the concerned operators failed to produce valid papers, although they claimed to possess excise department permission.

In addition, expired food items were reportedly found in one of the restaurants during the inspection.

Following the irregularities, the civic body ordered immediate demolition of the illegal structures. Notices have also been served to several shops and establishments, directing them to submit valid documents to the municipal authorities for verification. Further necessary action will be taken based on compliance.
