Siliguri youth loses Rs 60,000 in an online shopping scam

Siliguri, 22nd January: A young man from Siliguri fell victim to an online shopping scam. Ashraf Ali, a young man from Kolkata, has been accused of deceiving.


The victim has been identified as Ranjit Bepari, a resident of Subhas Pally in Ward No. 18 in Siliguri. Ranjit stated that he downloaded an online shopping app on his mobile phone, on December 21. In the app, Ashraf Ali from Kolkata had registered an advertisement to sell a vehicle. Ranjit contacted Ali through the app and the negotiations for the vehicle started.

Ali asked Ranjit to make an online payment, after which, Ranjit made an online payment of 5 hundred rupees on December 21. On December 23, Ranjit made another online payment of 18 thousand rupees. A total amount of 60 thousand rupees was paid by Ranjit. After receiving the payment, Ali assured Ranjit that his vehicle had reached Bagdogra Airport and that he would receive the vehicle in a few hours, but no vehicle was provided. No contacts with Ashraf Ali could be made since then.


Ranjit Bepari has filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Department, in this regard. The investigation regarding the incident is being carried on.
