Siliguri, 21st July: Bhakti Nagar police have arrested a TMC leader on charges of alleged extortion and assault at Salugara market. Police registered a case under various sections and produced the accused before the Jalpaiguri court.
According to reports, TMC leader Sanjay Limbu and his associates were allegedly collecting market fees from traders at Salugara market for a long time. However, this time the Siliguri Municipal Corporation awarded the tender for market cleaning and fee collection to another person, Ranjit Parida.
It is alleged that despite the tender being awarded to another party, Sanjay Limbu reached the market with his supporters and allegedly continued collecting money from traders. The issue reportedly led to tension and disputes in the market over the past few days.
The complaint stated that on Monday evening, when tender holder Ranjit Parida was distributing coupons and collecting market fees from traders, Sanjay Limbu allegedly arrived at the spot with his supporters and allegedly attacked him, leaving him injured.
Following the incident, Ranjit Parida lodged a written complaint at Bhakti Nagar police station. Based on the complaint, police arrested Sanjay Limbu.
The accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday. Police have started an investigation into the matter and are looking into the allegations.
