Siliguri court sentenced 15 years of imprisonment to two cannabis smugglers after 10 years of trial 

Siliguri, 23rd December: The trial of 10 years finally settled with a verdict in the Siliguri court where the court convicted two accused of drug peddling and sentenced them to 15 years of imprisonment and a fine.  


It is to be noted that in the year 2013, the DRI team arrested Pappu Giri and Lakhan Thakur from Siliguri on the charges of smuggling 2kg of cannabis. After this, the hearing of the case began in Siliguri court. In the year 2018, the charge sheet of the DRI case was submitted. The trial went on in the Siliguri Court for almost 10 years finally on Thursday, the judge gave a verdict convicting both the accused of the crime and sentenced them to 15 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Since both the accused have already served 10 years out of 15 as per the court’s decision due to being in jail for ten years during the pendency of the case, both will remain in prison for another five years. In addition, on failing to pay the fine then an additional two years will be added to their jail time.

On this subject, the counsel for the DRI side, Trideep Saha, said that in 2013, both the accused were arrested for smuggling cannabis from Siliguri to Uttar Pradesh. Statements of six people were recorded in the hearing of the case. After this, the decision of the court has come to the fore after about 10 years.
