Several lock gates of Fulbari Mahananda Barrage opened following sharp rise in water level

Fulbari, 19th June: The water level of the Mahananda River has risen significantly following continuous rainfall across both the hilly and plain regions of North Bengal. In response to the increasing water pressure, several lock gates of the Mahananda Barrage at Fulbari have been opened to release excess water.

According to administrative sources, persistent rainfall in the hills and adjoining plains has caused a rapid surge in the river’s flow. To manage the situation and prevent excessive water accumulation, authorities have opened multiple gates of the barrage, resulting in a high-volume discharge of water at considerable speed.

The increased release has led to stronger currents in areas surrounding the barrage, prompting concerns for the safety of residents and people living along the riverbanks.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across the hilly and plain districts of North Bengal over the next few days. In view of the prevailing conditions, the administration has advised residents and fishermen to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the river unnecessarily.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation as continuous rainfall and rising water levels continue to pose potential risks in the region.
