Siliguri, 10th August: Darjeeling District Trinamool Congress staged a protest march in Siliguri against the eviction of hawkers and traders operating on railway land and submitted a memorandum to railway authorities.
The march was organised from the Railway Institute ground under the leadership of the Darjeeling District TMC. District TMC president Kuntal Roy, former Siliguri Municipal Corporation mayor Gautam Deb, TMC councillors from various wards, party leaders, workers and supporters participated in the march.
The procession passed through various roads before reaching the ADRM office, where the delegation submitted a memorandum to a railway official.
Kuntal Roy said the party’s primary demand is rehabilitation for hawkers being evicted from railway land. He said their businesses are their main source of income and support their families.
Roy urged the railway authorities to consider the matter from a humanitarian perspective and make arrangements to rehabilitate the affected hawkers.
