Siliguri, 29th August: The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) region has been included in the process of the re-demarcation of panchayats. As per the new notification released by the Election Commission of West Bengal, the GTA region received a green signal to undergo re-delimitation process for panchayat elections.
This is a great achievement for the hills since there has been no Panchayat election in this area since the last 2000. The people especially in the rural areas have been deprived of various government benefits. The leaders of various political parties of the hills had written to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of the state with the demand that panchayat elections should be held in the GTA area as well. The people of rural areas are ecstatic about the announcement of the election.
