Siliguri, 06th August: Rajasthan Police, with the help of Pradhan Nagar Police Station under Siliguri Metropolitan Police, arrested a man from Siliguri in connection with an alleged online investment fraud case involving ₹2.80 crore.
The arrested accused has been identified as Deepu Mandal, who was apprehended from the Devidanga Babubhasa area late Wednesday night. Police said he was staying in a rented house in the area and is originally a resident of Maynaguri.
According to police sources, a woman from Rajsamand in Rajasthan had lodged a complaint at the cyber police station alleging that she was lured with promises of high returns through forex trading and online investment.
It is alleged that the woman was made to deposit crores of rupees into different bank accounts. Initially, she was shown profits on her investment, but when she tried to withdraw the money, she was allegedly asked to deposit more funds. Later, she realised that she had been cheated and approached the police.
Following the complaint, Rajasthan Police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act and started an investigation.
During the investigation, police traced several bank accounts, mobile numbers and digital transaction records, which allegedly led them to Deepu Mandal.
Police suspect that the accused may be linked to a larger cyber fraud network. Further investigation is underway to identify other members involved in the network and trace the movement of the fraud amount.
Rajasthan Police produced the accused before the Siliguri court on Thursday and will take him to Rajasthan on transit remand for further questioning.
