Siliguri, 29th August: The SOG team of the NJP Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a passenger for allegedly transporting demonetised currency notes by train and recovered old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes worth around ₹9 lakh from his possession.
The arrested accused has been identified as Santosh Kumar, 30, a resident of Bihar. He was travelling in the general coach of the Saraighat Express, which was travelling from Assam to Kolkata.
Acting on a tip-off, the GRP conducted a search of the train at NJP railway station. During the search, several bundles of demonetised notes were allegedly recovered from the accused’s bag.
During questioning, Santosh reportedly told the police that he was supposed to deliver the notes in Kolkata. However, police are investigating who had given him the notes and to whom they were to be handed over.
The accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri court. The GRP is continuing its investigation to uncover the alleged network and determine the purpose behind transporting the demonetised currency.
