Nirbhaya case: President rejects Mukesh’s mercy petition, the last process to avoid hanging

2012 Delhi Nirbhaya Case: In the latest development, the mercy petition filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the four convicts, was rejected by President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday on the recommendation of the Union Home Ministry.

In such a situation, the last door to escape being hanged has been shut and Mukesh is certain to be executed. It is to recall, the guilty Mukesh Singh had presented a mercy petition to Tihar Jail Administration after the Patiala House Court issued death warrant on January 7 against the four convicts – Mukesh Singh (32), Vinay Sharma (26), Pawan Gupta (25) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) – of the Nirbhaya case.

The convicts sentenced to be hanged can file mercy petition seeking mercy from the President. On the other hand, the President has the right under Article 72 of the Constitution to waive the death sentence.
