Siliguri, 14th July: To reduce traffic congestion on one of the busiest roads in the city, the Traffic Department of Siliguri Metropolitan Police has introduced a new lane system on Sevoke Road.
Under the new arrangement, slow-moving passenger vehicles like autos and totos will operate only in the left lane, while private cars, taxis, and other four-wheelers will use the right lane.
The Traffic Department believes that the new system will make vehicle movement more organised and help control the long-standing traffic congestion problem on Sevoke Road. The road experiences heavy traffic throughout the day due to the presence of markets, schools, hospitals, and offices.
According to the new arrangement, autos and totos will have to remain on the left side of the white lane marking, while other vehicles will use the right side. The initiative aims to reduce unnecessary lane changes and lower the chances of accidents.
Under the direction of DCP (Traffic) Quazi Samsuddin Ahamed and ACP Subir Dutta, Panitanki Traffic Guard OC Swapan Roy and his team are conducting regular drives to ensure proper implementation of the new system. Public awareness is also being carried out through announcements using microphones.
