Siliguri, 17th July: Several mobile phone thefts were reported during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Siliguri, with multiple complaints being lodged at Siliguri and Bhakti Nagar police stations.
According to police sources, numerous complaints of stolen mobile phones have been received. Considering the seriousness of the matter, police have detained two youths on suspicion and begun questioning them.
The incidents reportedly took place during the grand Rath Yatra procession organised by ISKCON Siliguri on Thursday, which witnessed the participation of thousands of devotees.
Police suspect that miscreants took advantage of the large crowd and stole mobile phones while devotees were engaged in pulling the chariot and offering prayers to Lord Jagannath.
Several victims said they were so engrossed in the celebrations that they did not realise their phones had been stolen until later. They subsequently approached the police and lodged complaints.
