Man sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case in Siliguri

Siliguri, 25th June: A Fast Track Court in Siliguri has sentenced Anand Oraon to life imprisonment after convicting him in a murder case that dates back to 2019.

According to court records, the incident took place on the night of September 20, 2019, following celebrations related to the Viswakarma Puja immersion. After returning home, Manglu Oraon had reportedly gone to sleep at a relative’s house.

It was alleged that Anand Oraon, who was under the influence of alcohol, attacked Manglu Oraon with a tree branch and an iron rod during the night.

Manglu Oraon sustained severe injuries in the assault and collapsed on the spot. Local residents rushed him to Siliguri District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, police from Pradhan Nagar Police Station launched an investigation and recovered the tree branch and iron rod allegedly used in the attack. Anand Oraon was subsequently arrested.

After completing the investigation, police filed a chargesheet before the court. During the trial, eyewitness testimonies and other evidence were presented before the court.

Public Prosecutor Anandita Guha stated that the case was transferred to the Fast Track Court in 2021. A total of 22 witnesses testified during the course of the trial.

Based on the eyewitness accounts and the evidence placed before it, the court found Anand Oraon guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
