Mahananda Bachao Committee to file a petition in Green Tribunal to save the Mahananda River

Siliguri, 29th June: The Mahananda Bachao Committee held a press conference at the Siliguri Journalists Club on Tuesday and said that they will submit a petition to the Green Tribunal to conserve the Mahananda River.

“Mahananda is an important river. But at present, there is a rise in pollution in the river water. Illegal quarrying is happening around the Mahananda bridge pillar,” Nidhubhushan Das, President of the committee said.

He added that a few days ago, SMC administrator Goutam Deb inspected the Mahananda River and said that advanced parking arrangements will be provided on the ground beside the river. However, the Green Tribunal said that permanent construction cannot be done along the river as it can harm the city’s situation. Hence, a petition will be filed in the Green Tribunal in this regard.

On the other hand, Ranjan Sarkar, a member of the BoA at SMC, said “I don’t know about the petition. Our slogan is Clean and Green City. The people of Siliguri want development. SMC has no thoughts of ruining any place. Development work will be done in the land of SMC.”
