Locals stage road blockade demanding justice for traders attacked in Gajoldoba

Rajganj, 05th January: Atmosphere boiled up in Gajoldoba after a group of youths were accused of attacking several traders and police officials on Monday evening. It has been alleged that the youths carried out violence with firearms. The incident sparked widespread tensions in the area.

On Tuesday, the local traders and residents blocked the Ambari-Gajoldoba state highway demanding compensation and immediate arrest of the culprits. However, the protesters lifted the blockade after two-hours with the assurance of the police.

The traders said that initially, 5-6 youths started arguing with the shopkeeper after having tea and food at a shop in Gajoldoba. The police officials who were present at the spot tried to stop the disorder, however, the youths grew more violent. Following this, the police detained two of the youths and took them to the police station.

Allegedly, the police tried to settle the matter but after around half an hour, four vehicles arrived and vandalized several shops with arrows, bows, and firearms, and also attacked the traders. During the course, they claimed to be the supporters of Trinamool SC/ST/OBC cell Jalpaiguri district president Krishna Das. The traders were then forced to flee away from the scene to save their lives.

Jalpaiguri MP Dr Jayanta Roy came to the spot to inspect the situation. BJP state vice-president Dipen Pramanik and local leaders were also present.

Dr Jayanta Roy accused the police administration of not taking strict action. The traders alleged that the supporters of TMC leader Krishna Das carried out the violence. Roy said that he has asked the police to take the necessary action. He warned of staging larger demonstrations if the accused are not arrested within 24 hours.
