Local traders and environmentalists alert forest department and police after trees at Sevoke More were chopped down in the dark of night

Siliguri, 03rd November: A case of cutting two trees in the dark of night by miscreants near the roadside of Sevoke More has come to the fore. Local traders expressed anguish over the incident. Hill Cart Road Byabasayee Samity has lodged a written complaint with the police station and forest department. At the same time, environmentalists also expressed their anger over the incident.

It is to be noted, for many years, there were two trees on the side of the road at Sevoke More. It has been told that the miscreants carried out this act late on Tuesday night. After this, the Hill Cart Road Byabasayee Samity and environmentalists learned about the incident. They have demanded the arrest of the culprits by scanning the CCTV footage installed in the area.

Vijay Gupta, president of the committee, said that the business people and traders had planted the trees together. Apart from their branches, which often used to make it difficult to see the signboards, no one ever thought of cutting down the trees. The traders are assuming that the advertising agencies must have done this for their convenience as the trees hazed the boards.

At the same time, environmentalist Animesh Basu strongly condemned the incident. He further said that birds used to get shelter because of the tree. He maintained that while the sparrow birds are on verge of extinction due to deforestation, they are fortunately still spotted in Siliguri city. And such big trees provide shelter to these birds. However, with the occurrence of such an incidence, the birds will shortly fall into extinction he added.
