Left activists hit streets to make bandh a success in Siliguri

Siliguri, 12th February: Left activists including members of the left students’ organization took to the streets of Siliguri to make the strike a success since this morning.

It is to be noted that the left front leaders held Nabanna Abhiyan on Thursday in support of several demands including the setting up of new industries in the state and unemployment. The atmosphere boiled up in the Dharmatala area surrounding the campaign. Police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas and water cannons. In the course, several workers and activists were injured. Protesting against the incident, the Left front called for a 12-hour strike across Bengal on today.

Left leaders and activists took out several rallies from Anil Biswas Bhavan in Siliguri in support of the band since this morning. A bike rally was also held which circled various routes in the city. Party activists were spotted directing to close shops opened at various places in the city.

Autos and totos plying on the road were also asked to turn back by the Left supporters who were standing in front of Anil Biswas Bhavan. Later, police personnel from Siliguri Police Station reached the spot and removed them from the road. Meanwhile, a huge police force has been stationed in various areas of the city since morning to avoid any untoward incident.
