Siliguri, 17th July: A major burglary attempt targeting a jewellery shop in Siliguri was foiled after miscreants allegedly planned to create a tunnel-like passage to enter the store and carry out the theft.
According to reports, the jewellery shop is located on the main road near Sabyasachi Club at Champasari More. A vacant political party office adjacent to the shop was allegedly used by the miscreants to plan the operation.
The matter came to light when the vacant office was being cleaned ahead of the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra preparations. During the cleaning process, locals noticed a tunnel-like opening being made through the wall along with a gas cutter and other suspicious equipment.
Following the information, Pradhan Nagar Police reached the spot and started an investigation. Police have seized the gas cutter and other equipment from the spot and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify those involved.
The incident has created concern among local traders. Business owners said a major theft could have taken place if the plan had not been detected in time and demanded early identification and arrest of the accused.
