Jalpaiguri, 17th February: The health workers of the Jalpaiguri Multipurpose Health Worker (MPHW) department staged a hunger strike on Monday demanding a salary hike.
The strike was staged in front of the Jalpaiguri District Chief Health office. The MPHW workers of the various blocks of Jalpaiguri district alleged that they started working in the year 2010, with a salary of 6 thousand rupees. Then the salary was raised to 13 thousand 8 hundred rupees after 2 years. However, since then no increment has been made. They further stated that despite reporting the matter to the administration several times, no settlement was provided.
MPHW employee Raju Sarkar warned of staging larger demonstrations if their demands are not met soon.
