Siliguri, 22nd June: Pradhan Nagar Police have arrested an absconding accused in connection with an alleged rape case involving a false promise of marriage. The accused has been identified as Amit Chakraborty (36), a resident of Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district.
According to police sources, a woman lodged a complaint at Pradhan Nagar Police Station in 2023, alleging that Amit Chakraborty had established a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage and later deceived her. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections and launched an investigation.
However, the accused allegedly remained absconding after the case was registered. During a recent review of pending and old cases by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police Commissionerate, the matter came up for discussion, following which investigating officer Sudip Saha initiated a fresh probe.
Acting on intelligence inputs regarding the accused’s whereabouts, a team from Pradhan Nagar Police Station conducted a raid in Chopra and arrested Amit Chakraborty on Sunday.
The accused was produced before a Siliguri court on Monday. Further investigation into the case is underway.
