Ghoshpukur Range records no ‘leopard road kill’ in a year after conservation efforts

Ghoshpukur, 15th July: Once considered a dangerous stretch for leopards due to frequent road accidents, the roads under Ghoshpukur Range have witnessed a significant change with no leopard deaths reported due to road accidents in the past year.

According to the Forest Department, after the last road kill incident in January 2025, no leopard has died in any road accident in the Ghoshpukur Range over the last one year.

The department attributed this achievement to continuous conservation efforts, including the ‘Brake for Wildlife’ awareness campaign, increased monitoring in sensitive areas, driver awareness programmes, and active participation of local residents.

Officials stated that while 10 to 15 leopards were once killed annually in road accidents, the number has now reduced to almost zero, making Ghoshpukur Range a positive example of wildlife conservation.

Apart from reducing leopard deaths, the Forest Department has also achieved success in leopard cub conservation. This year, a total of eight cubs rescued in five separate incidents were safely reunited with their mothers.
