Fishing activity rises at Fulbari Mahananda Barrage as water level increases

Fulbari, 19th June: A rise in water levels at the Mahananda Barrage in Fulbari has led to a significant increase in fishing activity, with hundreds of fishermen gathering along the riverbanks to take advantage of the seasonal influx of fish.

The water level at the barrage has increased following continuous rainfall across the hilly and plain regions of North Bengal. As several lock gates were opened to release excess water, fresh river flow brought a variety of fish species into the area, attracting fishermen from nearby localities.

Since Friday morning, more than a hundred fishermen have been seen casting their nets in the waters adjacent to the barrage. Popular species such as Boroli, Puti, and Tangra are being caught in large numbers, creating a lively atmosphere around the barrage.

Local fisherman Rajkumar Roy said that fish populations typically increase when river levels rise during the monsoon season, providing an opportunity for additional income. Besides selling their catch in local markets, many fishermen are also selling fish directly to visitors near the barrage.

The abundance of fresh fish drew a large number of buyers to the area throughout the day. Amiruddin Islam, a local resident, said that the increase in river water has also led to a rise in fish numbers, prompting him to purchase fish directly from fishermen at the site.
