Siliguri, 22nd December: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the NJP Government Railway Police (GRP) has busted a fake currency trafficking attempt being carried out through a train from Kamakhya to Bihar.

Reportedly, acting on specific intelligence, the GRP recovered counterfeit currency worth ₹2,74,500 and arrested one passenger in connection with the case.

According to GRP sources, the accused has been identified as MD Akram Anwar (27), a resident of Purnia district in Bihar. He had boarded the train from Kamakhya near Guwahati, allegedly carrying fake currency notes intended to be delivered in Bihar.

Based on prior inputs, the GRP SOG team launched an operation at NJP Railway Station on Sunday evening. As the train arrived at platform number 3, the team conducted a search inside the train and detained the accused on suspicion.

During the search, five black packets were recovered from his bag, containing bundles of counterfeit ₹500 notes. The notes were found to be completely fake.

GRP officials confirmed that a total of ₹2,74,500 in counterfeit currency, all in ₹500 denominations, was seized from the accused. During preliminary interrogation, the accused revealed that he had been in contact with an unknown person through WhatsApp, following which he was handed over the packets at Kamakhya with instructions to transport them to Bihar.

The GRP foiled the trafficking attempt and took the accused into custody. He will be produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Monday, where the police will seek remand for further interrogation.

Investigations are underway to identify other individuals involved in the fake currency racket and to trace the wider network behind the operation.
