Elephant attack claims one life in Teesta Line area of Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, 01st June: A tragic incident occurred in the Teesta Line area, under Barapatia Gram Panchayat of Jalpaiguri District where a young man lost his life in an elephant attack. The victim has been identified as Sagar Das (25), a resident of the Nathua Char area in the Barapatia Nutanbas village.


According to local sources, two brothers had taken their cows to the field for grazing early in the morning. Unaware of the presence of an elephant in the peanut farm, they proceeded to work there. Suddenly, the wild elephant attacked them. The younger brother managed to escape and save his life, but unfortunately, Sagar fell victim to the ferocious raid. He was rescued and immediately rushed to Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The area was engulfed in a somber atmosphere following the demise of the young man. In protest, the enraged local residents blocked the Bodaganj-Milanpally road in the vicinity by lighting a fire. They expressed their grief and frustration, citing that a herd of elephants had been causing havoc in the area for several months, leading to the destruction of crops. Furthermore, they accused the Forest Department of inadequately addressing the issue and demanded that the relevant authorities take decisive action to drive away the wild elephants from residential areas.
