Siliguri, 20th August: A man was arrested for allegedly staging the theft of his younger brother’s motorcycle and filing a false complaint with the police. The accused, identified as Sugam Tirkey, is a resident of Gulma.
According to police sources, Sugam allegedly took his younger brother Sonam Tirkey’s motorcycle late on August 17 and went somewhere with it. On August 19, he reportedly lodged a complaint at Pradhan Nagar Police Station claiming that the motorcycle had been stolen.
Following the complaint, police questioned both brothers and began an investigation. During the investigation, police obtained CCTV footage from the Siliguri Junction area, which reportedly showed Sugam arriving there on his brother’s motorcycle.
According to police, he then took the motorcycle to another location and hid it before allegedly creating a false story about its theft and filing the complaint.
Police subsequently detained Sugam and questioned him. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to hiding the motorcycle. Based on information provided by him, police recovered the motorcycle from the Gate Bazar area on Wednesday night.
Pradhan Nagar Police Station IC BD Sarkar said the accused had allegedly fabricated a story about his younger brother’s motorcycle being stolen and lodged a complaint at the police station. The matter was subsequently uncovered with the help of CCTV footage.
According to police, preliminary questioning suggests that Sugam allegedly staged the theft to meet a personal requirement. Police said he apparently did not expect the CCTV footage to reveal the truth.
A case has been registered against the accused for allegedly stealing the motorcycle and misleading police by filing a false complaint. He was produced before the Siliguri court, and further investigation is underway.
