Dengue havoc in Siliguri: Mayor inspected Ward No. 05, expressed anger against railways

Siliguri, 13th October: Often dengue surges during the time of monsoon, as heavy rain grows a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This often increases the risk of exposure to mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue. The havoc of dengue has engulfed Siliguri city for almost a month now. Several cases of dengue have been reported from many wards of the city. In such a situation, the disease is increasing and raising concerns among the people.

Likewise, a large number of people are infected with dengue in Ward No. 05 under Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Many people have also died due to the disease. In view of this, Mayor Goutam Deb took stock of the said ward and held a discussion with the Borough Chairperson, Mayor-Council, Councilor, and VCT team. He also paid a visit to a patient in the ward suffering from dengue.

During his inspection, the Mayor said that all possible efforts are being made to prevent dengue in the city. The outbreak of mosquitoes is increasing in the city due to the overcrowding of barns and a notice to remove them had already been issued. But despite this, the sheds and sty still remain in the area. In this context, the Mayor said that he would issue a second notice on the same.

On Wednesday, the SMC held discussions with various departments and councilors to contain the spread of dengue. The Mayor further said that the Railways were also asked to join the discussion, however, the railway officials apparently did not attend. “There are many railway quarters in Siliguri, which are currently lying vacant. The areas are mostly covered with bushes making it an apt mosquito breeding site. But no one came on behalf of the department even after informing the railways,” the Mayor added. He further said that a letter will be given in this regard.
