Demoiselle Crane spotted near Teesta River in Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, 07th November: Migratory birds Demoiselle Crane (also known as the Koonj) was spotted on the banks of Teesta River in Jalpaiguri. Bird experts mark this sighting as a new addition to the list of birds in West Bengal.


The Siberian Demoiselle Crane, according to bird experts, is often spotted in Rajasthan and Gujarat but never had been seen on the soil of West Bengal. Today is the first time the winter bird was sighted on the banks of river Teesta.

Bird specialist and secretary of Jalpaiguri Science and Nature Club Dr Raja Raut said that this is the first time the Demoiselle Crane will be included in the list of birds in West Bengal where the name of the Teesta River will also be mentioned. 


Reportedly, the forest department has been keeping a close eye on the bird from the moment they were notified regarding the sighting. 

Meanwhile, bird lovers who come to watch migratory birds along the Teesta River during the autumn season every year, are being spotted capturing the Demoiselle Crane on their camera.
