Siliguri, 17th July: The demand for declaring Siliguri as a separate district has once again gained momentum, with Brihattar Siliguri Nagarik Mancha raising the issue and announcing a citizens’ meeting on July 20.
The organisation has also demanded the introduction of a Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Siliguri. Addressing a press conference in Siliguri on Friday, the organisation highlighted both demands and indicated plans for a larger movement in the coming days.
Brihattar Siliguri Nagarik Mancha Secretary Ratan Banik said that the demand for a separate Siliguri district is not new. He stated that since 2012, the organisation has been submitting applications, memorandums and collecting public signatures to press for the demand. The organisation stated that Siliguri’s importance as the gateway to North Bengal is increasing every day and administrative pressure has also increased. According to the organisation, a separate district and Metropolitan Magistrate Court are necessary in the interest of the public.
