Darjeeling’s runaway COVID patient caught after 11-day chase

Jorebunglow/Darjeeling, 13th August: Bhim Rai, the runaway coronavirus infected man, was nabbed by the police Thursday evening.


Rai was spotted in Hospital Dara near Jorebunglow by a driver, who was passing by the area, this morning. When he called out to Rai, the fugitive allegedly ran towards the jungle.

A search was immediately conducted in the area as soon as the locals informed the police. After eleven days of the chase, the absconder was nabbed by the police this evening.


It is to recall, the COVID positive Rai, a resident of Chhota hatta (which falls under the Rimbik-Lodhoma constituency) managed to flee midway while he was being taken to the Triveni COVID Hospital in an ambulance, on August 02.

According to the ambulance driver, the escapee asked him to stop the vehicle when they were driving through the 3rd Mile stretch as the patient wanted to urinate. As soon as the vehicle stopped, the man ran away from the scene.

Stunned by the episode, the ambulance driver began frantically looking for the runaway COVID patient. When all attempts failed, he immediately informed the Jorebunglow Police Station.

Upon the arrival of the police and exchanging a few words regarding the patient, it was revealed that the man was out on a parole for a month after being sentenced life imprisonment for killing his wife.
