Cybercrime gang busted in Siliguri; three arrested, China link suspected

Siliguri, 13th April: A cybercrime gang was busted in Siliguri following a joint operation by the Sukna unit of Army Intelligence and Pradhan Nagar Police. Three members of the racket were arrested from a reputed private hotel in the Salbari area.

The arrested accused have been identified as Husainuddin (23) from Haryana, Ujjal Sarkar (36) from Itahar in Uttar Dinajpur, and Nirmal Pal (34) from Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri. Several mobile phones and other incriminating materials were seized from their possession.

Preliminary investigation of the recovered mobile devices revealed multiple suspicious numbers. According to police sources, investigators have detected suspected links connecting the cybercrime network to China, while the racket was allegedly being operated by an individual based in Nepal.

Officials stated that Husainuddin had arrived from Haryana to expand the network in Siliguri. Along with his associates, he allegedly procured bank accounts from unsuspecting individuals to route fraudulent funds. After receiving the money, the accounts were reportedly closed. The accused are also suspected of cheating victims in India and abroad under the pretext of online cryptocurrency trading.

The three accused were produced before the Siliguri court, where police sought their remand. The Army Intelligence Sukna unit is continuing its probe to uncover the gang’s motive and trace its international links.

Notably, on Saturday night, Pradhan Nagar Police had earlier busted an international cybercrime racket in the same area, arresting eight individuals from a house based on a tip-off. Authorities seized several ATM cards, 18 passbooks, eight cheque books, a Wi-Fi device, cash, crucial documents, and ten mobile phones.

The back-to-back crackdowns have sent shockwaves across Siliguri, highlighting the growing vigilance of security agencies against organised cyber fraud networks.
