Bagdogra, 24th June: A medicine-laden container truck overturned on the Asian Highway 2 (AH) near Bagdogra on Monday night, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours between Bagdogra and Naxalbari. The accident occurred after the vehicle lost control and rammed into a bridge, reportedly due to heavy rainfall.
The container, registered in Haryana, was en route from Siliguri to Jaipur when it lost control at Junglee Baba More in Bagdogra. It hit the bridge and overturned, blocking the highway completely. The incident caused a long traffic jam stretching across several kilometres.
Upon receiving the alert, police personnel from Bagdogra police station and the Bagdogra Traffic Guard rushed to the spot. Braving the rain, they managed to safely rescue both the driver and co-driver, who escaped without injuries.
The highway remained blocked until morning, with a long queue of vehicles stranded. The situation was gradually brought under control as efforts were made to clear the route. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the mishap.
