Closed tea estates in Darjeeling to open from Sept 9

Darjeeling, 08th September: In the recent turn of events, the 10 tea estates under Darjeeling Organic Tea Estates Pvt. Ltd (DOTEPL) formerly the Bansal Group, are set to be opened from tomorrow, i.e. September 09. The move comes amid the relay hunger strike under the aegis of the Hill Terai Dooars Plantation Workers Union (HTDPWU) affiliated to Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha, as a protest demanding cancellation of the owner’s lease. The company has assured to pay the arrears of the tea workers and open the currently closed tea gardens.

It is to be noted, after the company failed to provide salary, expenses and other concessional facilities in 10 tea estates, the labour organization of BGPM started protesting by shutting down the tea gardens and demanding the owner’s lease be cancelled. However, it is being said that the tea estates are now in favour of resuming work from tomorrow, sidestepping the protest.
