Siliguri, 26th June: A fresh incident of theft has been reported from the Dakshin Ektiasal area near the Eastern Bypass in Siliguri, raising fresh concerns over law and order. The incident occurred late at night, with mobile phones, cash, and other valuables reported stolen.
According to sources, the theft came to light when the residents woke up on Thursday morning. CCTV footage from a neighboring house showed two youths entering the house and fleeing with the stolen items.
The victim’s family alleged that when they approached the Ashighar Outpost to file a complaint, police initially refused to accept it and asked them to return after noon. Upon returning, the complaint was only registered after multiple requests, with officers allegedly insisting it be logged as a missing diary. The family declined to lodge a false report, after which the complaint was finally accepted. Police reportedly assured they would investigate the matter on Friday.
The incident has intensified public anger and fear amid a growing number of thefts, robberies, and looting cases across Siliguri. Allegations have been made that the police and administration are failing to act decisively. No response was received from the Ashighar Outpost OC when contacted for comment.
