Siliguri, 11th June: A 75-year-old woman, identified as Joshan Basak, attempted suicide by jumping into a well in the Sreema Sarani area under Ashighar Outpost of Bhakti Nagar Police Station. The incident occurred on Wednesday when few people were present at home.
According to local sources, the woman had previously attempted suicide. Just two days ago, she reportedly tried to set herself on fire but was saved in time by her family members.
This time, her daughter Mukti Basak witnessed her jumping into the well and immediately raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to the spot, and police along with fire department personnel were informed.
Responding swiftly, the fire brigade and police managed to rescue the woman after considerable effort. She was immediately admitted to Siliguri District Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Family sources revealed that the elderly woman had been suffering from prolonged mental stress and family-related tensions. Police have begun investigating the incident.
