4500 bottles of banned cough syrup seized in Fulbari, three arrested

Fulbari, 29th May: In a major operation, New Jalpaiguri Police seized around 4500 bottles of banned cough syrup from a small goods vehicle near Jiaganj area adjacent to Fulbari on the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri National Highway late Friday night. Three persons were arrested in connection with the incident.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid in the area and intercepted the vehicle. During the search operation, officials recovered 30 cartons containing the banned cough syrup.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Alok Kundu of Hakimpara in Siliguri, vehicle driver Prasenjit Mukherjee and assistant driver Surajit Haldar, both residents of Howrah.

According to police sources, preliminary investigation suggests that the cough syrup consignment was allegedly being transported to Siliguri for smuggling purposes. The market value of the seized cough syrup is reportedly worth several lakh rupees.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections and produced the accused before the Jalpaiguri district court on Saturday.
