Woman allegedly poisoned to death by husband and in-laws through ‘Panta Bhat’ in Rajganj

Rajganj, 02nd June: Sensation prevailed in the Purbi Banijya area, under Sukani Gram Panchayat of Rajganj, after serious allegations were raised against the husband and in-laws of a woman for her alleged murder by poisoning her Panta Bhat. The victim, identified as Babli Khatoon, resided in Bholapara within the Gram Panchayat.

According to reports, Babli Khatoon was married to Lakhibar Rehman, a resident of Purba Banjote, around 14 years ago, following social customs. However, it is alleged that she faced constant pressure from her husband and in-laws to provide money, leading to alleged abuse and torture when she failed to comply. The couple has two daughters together.

Around two years ago, Babli’s husband, Lakhibar, married for a second time. Following this, Babli started working in people’s homes to support herself. Tragically, on Thursday afternoon, after returning from work, Babli sat down to eat Panta Bhat (a traditional dish made with fermented rice). However, after consuming the meal, she began vomiting and was immediately rushed to Rajganj Rural Hospital. She was later transferred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. Sadly, Babli passed away this morning.

Babli’s parents suspect foul play and believe that poison was mixed in the Panta Bhat as part of a premeditated plan. They allege that Babli was intentionally murdered by means of the contaminated food. The relatives have filed a written complaint against three individuals, including Babli’s husband and his second wife, at the Rajganj police station.

Based on the complaint, the police have arrested two individuals who were produced before the Jalpaiguri district court today. However, Babli’s husband and other family members are currently absconding. The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the entire matter.
