Violent clash after protest against theft in Siliguri, one dead, one arrested

Siliguri, April 26th: A protest against theft turned deadly, resulting in the loss of a family member’s life and several others injured. The incident occurred in Darjeeling More Hathidoba area under the jurisdiction of the Pradhan Nagar police station, causing tensions in the locality. The deceased, identified as Ghanshyam Prasad, tragically lost his life during the altercation.


Significantly, the police have taken swift action and apprehended one of the accused, Purna Mukhiya (48), while continuing the search for the remaining perpetrators.

As per reports, the incident occurred on the night of April 24, during a wedding celebration for the sister of a local resident Ranjan Sah. Allegedly, Ghanshyam Prasad intervened when Ramesh Mukhiya, along with other individuals, attempted to steal from their shop, sparking a heated altercation that escalated into violence. Consequently, five individuals sustained serious injuries in the clash.


Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged at the Pradhan Nagar police station against six individuals, including Ramesh Mukhiya. Purna Mukhiya was subsequently arrested and was produced before the Siliguri court for further legal proceedings.
