Siliguri, 29th September: Members of the Uttarbanga Safai Karmchari Welfare Organisation launched an indefinite work stoppage in Siliguri on Tuesday, demanding regularization of their jobs and an increase in wages.
Hundreds of sanitation workers took part in a rally to press for their demands. The procession began at Baghajatin Park, passed through Hill Cart Road and concluded at Baghajatin Park.
The protesters raised several demands, including the immediate regularization of sanitation workers’ jobs and a hike in wages. Organisation representatives said that the issues had been raised with the authorities for a long time, but no permanent solution had been reached.
The organisation has decided to continue the indefinite work stoppage until its demands are addressed.
The protest is expected to affect civic sanitation services in Siliguri in the coming days.
