Siliguri, 28th September: The Darjeeling District Congress organised a protest in Siliguri on Monday over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls, demanding the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest was organised following directions from the All India Congress.
Congress leaders and workers alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had acted in a biased manner in connection with the electoral-roll revision process and raised questions over the neutrality of the Election Commission.
The protest march began from the foot of the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar near Siliguri Junction and proceeded towards the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), where Congress workers staged a demonstration.
The Congress alleged that names of eligible voters were being removed from electoral rolls under the SIR process allegedly under the influence of the ruling party. The party claimed that this was affecting the democratic rights of ordinary citizens and demanded immediate action over its allegations.
The protest was part of the Congress’s wider programme demanding the arrest and removal of Gyanesh Kumar and an independent review of decisions and electoral-roll changes made under his tenure.
