Siliguri, 30th September: The Uttar Banga Safai Karmachari Welfare Organisation held a press conference at the Siliguri Journalists’ Club on Wednesday, highlighting several long-standing issues and demands of safai workers.
The organisation stated that sanitation workers had stopped work and staged a protest at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation premises on Tuesday. They claimed that municipal officials were now threatening workers in an attempt to break the movement and force them to return to work. According to the organisation, some workers have already resumed their duties.
The organisation said that despite working for several years, most workers have not yet been made permanent. They also raised demands for salary hikes, health insurance for workers and resolution of several other long-standing issues.
The organisation stated that if their demands are not addressed soon, the movement will continue and could take a larger form in the coming days.
