Siliguri, 07th September: The Siliguri Unit of the Special Task Force (STF) arrested two persons and recovered one kilogram of brown sugar during an operation near New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station. The seized brown sugar is estimated to be worth crores of rupees in the market.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mehdul Alam (25) and Nurul S.K. (33), both residents of Assam.
According to information, the STF received a tip-off on Sunday night that two persons were arriving at NJP Railway Station from Assam by the Kamrup Express with a large quantity of brown sugar. They were allegedly planning to travel through Siliguri and deliver the consignment in Berhampur.
Following the information, the STF team conducted an operation near NJP station. During the operation, two persons were detained on suspicion. A black plastic bag was recovered from one accused, while a red-and-white plastic bag was found with the other.
During a search of both bags, STF personnel recovered six packets containing brown sugar, weighing approximately one kilogram in total.
The two accused were arrested under the NDPS Act and produced before the Siliguri Court on Monday.
The STF is now investigating the source of the brown sugar in Assam and trying to identify those involved in transporting the consignment to Berhampur. Further investigation into the case is underway.
