Siliguri, 31st October: With only a few days left before Diwali, potters in Siliguri are working at full pace to meet the demand for traditional clay lamps. Although decorative string lights and LED lighting have become increasingly popular for illuminating homes, the tradition of lighting earthen lamps during Diwali and Kali Puja continues.
In Palpara, located in Chayanpara, Siliguri, potters are busy preparing clay lamps from early morning until late at night. Thousands of lamps in different sizes, ranging from small to large, are being made in various designs. Artisans across generations, from elderly potters who have been associated with the traditional occupation for years to younger workers, are working hard to complete production ahead of the festivals.
Clay lamps are sold at different prices depending on their size and design. Their continued use in households during Diwali has sustained demand, keeping the traditional craft relevant despite the growing popularity of modern decorative lighting.
